直接或间接为人类需要而栽培的植物。“作物”一词由日语转借而来,在中国古籍中则称“禾稼”或“谷” 。古代有所谓“五谷”、“六谷”、“九谷”、以至“百谷”之称,其中谷的含义不断发展,由稻、黍稷、麦、菽,逐步扩大到麻类、瓜果、蔬菜乃至所有栽培植物。中国农业文献中自20世纪初开始引用“作物”一词,今已普及,俗称“庄稼”。
